The Holtsfield Campaign
Why the families of Holtsfield still need your help more than ever
IN March 1997 residents from Holtsfield on the Gower peninsula, South Wales, undertook an epic 250-mile march to the House of Lords in London for a legal judgment which they hoped would mark the end of an eight-year battle to save their self-built chalet community. The judgement on 1 May 1997, indeed, gave them a wonderful result in that it provides complete protection to Dai Morris and his family, who brought the test case, asserting their right to remain in the chalet which they have built and maintained for over 25 years.
The poignancy of our battle against property developers Elitestone has caught the imagination and emotions of people from all over Britain who have offered practical and moral support for the Holtsfield cause.
At this point we wish to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us in one way or another – we wouldn’t have got this far without you and we are deeply moved by the selflessness that many people have shown us. Thanks to you, we recognise that this campaign is not only about our homes in Holtsfield, but touches on the wider issues of low-cost housing, low-impact and environmentally sensitive living and, above all, issues of family and community and the right to self determination. Thank you!
But today, we, the residents need your help as much as ever. The House of Lords judgment marked a giant step forward, but many of our families are still unprotected and the community is still under threat from would-be “developer” Tim Jones.
These pages give a full and balanced account of the history of the struggle and many people will already be familiar with some of the details. In the the page ‘When Victory Means Losing Your Home’, you will find the most recent develoments in greater detail.
Practical ways of giving us your help can be found on the Action Page and on the Profit and Homelessness Page which is of importance to all customers of Barclays Bank.
Please read on to find out how you can preserve an important part of Gower’s heritage – and help 60 people live on in the chalets they have owned for many years.
